For outdoor enthusiasts and runners, COOLMAX® technology is synonymous with breathability and rapid drying. Since 2011, Shanghai Hicon Industrial has been a major exporter of COOLMAX® socks, integrating this moisture-wicking powerhouse into millions of trekking and running pairs worldwide.
However, the industry faces a persistent “open secret”: COOLMAX® fibers, while excellent at managing sweat, are notoriously prone to pilling (fuzzing) and low abrasion resistance, especially in high-friction areas like the heel and toe.
At Hicon, our journey hasn’t been without challenges. We have faced customer complaints regarding premature wear and pilling. But instead of avoiding these issues, our technical team spent years collaborating with yarn mills and testing knitting structures. Today, we share the three pillars of Hicon’s optimized COOLMAX® solution.
1. Strategic Nylon Reinforcement: The Strength of Hybrid Blends
The most effective way to protect the delicate moisture-wicking channels of COOLMAX® is to “armor” them.
-
The Hicon Solution: We have developed specific blending ratios that significantly increase the proportion of high-tenacity Nylon (Polyamide) within the knit.
-
The Benefit: Nylon acts as a structural skeleton. By wrapping or interknitting COOLMAX® with specialized nylon, we drastically improve the Martindale Abrasion Test results, ensuring the socks don’t develop holes after a few rugged hikes, while maintaining the signature dry-touch feel.
2. Source Innovation: Custom Siro-Spun COOLMAX® Yarns
Pilling starts at the yarn level. Standard spun yarns have loose fiber ends that migrate to the surface and form “pills” under friction.
-
The Hicon Solution: We collaborate with specialized spinning mills to produce Siro-Spun COOLMAX® yarns.
-
The Benefit: Siro-spinning produces a smoother, tighter yarn with fewer protruding fibers. By improving fiber cohesion at the source, we reduce the pilling rate by 1–1.5 grades compared to traditional spinning methods, ensuring the socks look new even after multiple wash cycles.
3. Structural Engineering: Optimization by Design
A great yarn can still fail in a poor construction. Hicon’s 15+ years of production experience allow us to optimize the “knitting architecture” of every pair.
-
The Hicon Solution: We provide Differentiated Density Mapping. For example, we might use a high-twist yarn in the friction-heavy heel and toe while maintaining a high-loft COOLMAX® loop in the instep for maximum ventilation.
-
The Benefit: We offer customized knitting solutions that balance the brand’s aesthetic goals with the mechanical realities of the fiber, resulting in a product that performs as good as it looks.
Partnering with a COOLMAX® Expert
Choosing a manufacturer who understands the failures of a material is as important as choosing the material itself. At Hicon, our history of solving real-world performance issues makes us the ideal partner for brands that refuse to compromise on durability.
